PEGGY FLANAGAN KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN FOR MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOL BOARD MARCH 30
Flanagan seeks to become first Native woman elected to Minneapolis School Board

WHAT: Peggy Flanagan will announce her candidacy for Minneapolis School Board at a
celebration at Maria’s Café in Minneapolis.

It's a difficult time to be involved in public education. Funding is down; publicity is bleak. But perhaps especially in times such as these, it is more pressing than ever for citizens to become involved — especially those who have been underrepresented.

“For too long other people have been making decisions for our community," says Flanagan. "It's time to speak for ourselves."

Flanagan, an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and a resident of North Minneapolis, hopes to use her experience working with urban youth and their families to tackle four specific areas as a member of the Minneapolis School Board: closing the achievement gap between white students and students of color; increasing family involvement in schools; increasing mentoring opportunities for children of color; and increasing collaboration between community groups and schools.

Flanagan believes her experience with a wide group of youth as a youth worker and activist has prepared her to represent everyone. "I am not only here to represent families of color," says Flanagan. "I'm committed to the success of all children in Minneapolis. Our children's needs are all interconnected."

WHEN: Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Maria's Café, 1113 East Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. Everyone is welcome.
